From all the images of war and destruction in Afghanistan we in the West have little idea of the lives of those who are part of the 30 million Afghans who are not at war and not fighting. Dana Freyer and her husband Bruce have been working with local Afghans to build community, plant trees, create storage houses, empower women and bring back the village life that existed in that rich country before the Soviet invasion 30 years ago. Their story is shocking in that it is so beautiful and so little known. More than 12,000 farmers have been directly involved; more than 8 million trees planted; more than 180 Afghans are making this all work at the village level.
